Tenancy agreements and starting a tenancy
Since 1 May 2026 most new and existing private tenancies in England are assured periodic tenancies. They have no fixed end date and roll on until you or your landlord end them in a way the law allows.
- Landlords must give the information required by law in writing for new tenancies.
- For tenancies that existed before 1 May 2026, landlords had to give tenants the government's Information Sheet on or before 31 May 2026.
- Some tenancies are excluded or treated differently, so check the official guidance for your situation.
